Volunteer

Ways to Volunteer:

Mentoring – Become a positive, consistent voice in the life of a youth as you spend a minimum of 1 hour a week including them in your life, hobbies and interests. These youth don’t need another parent, guardian, teacher or authority figure. They need a non-judgmental, listening ear and genuine interest in their life. Applicants must be 25+ and have a clean record going back 10 years. Send us a message using the form below and we’ll get back to you within 2 business days. Thank you!

301 Group Mentoring – 301 is a weekly group that meets at Skate Plaza Roller Rink in CDA (unless we’re on a field trip), and focuses on working through and overcoming the barriers to success our at-risk youth are facing. We hang out, share a meal and participate in a group discussion or activity designed to help everyone grow into successful, law-abiding, contributing members of society. Applicants must be 25+ and have a clean record going back 10 years.

  • Group Mentor: Build positive relationships with our youth, help facilitate the group and provide boundaries where needed.

  • Provide a meal for 301: We serve the youth and adults a meal every week, and we need folks to help us reduce costs by providing a meal each week. That could be you!

  • Have us over for a field trip!: Do you have an opportunity for our group to learn, grow, serve or have fun? Let us know what you have in mind! We love introducing our kids to career opportunities, educational opportunities, fun outings in the community, new experiences and anything else out of the box that could be beneficial for a young person to learn or experience.

Volunteer Chaplain – Minister to the incarcerated juveniles at the Juvenile Detention Center in Coeur d’Alene. Lead group discussions and meet with juveniles one on one when requested. Opportunities are limited, please send us a message using the form below if you are interested in learning more about becoming a Chaplain. Applicants must be 25+ years old and have a clean record going back 10 years.

What Are Our Kids Looking For In A Mentor?

The youth we work with are looking for someone to take a genuine interest in their life and become a consistent, positive presence. Our youth are not looking for another authority figure, teacher, parent, guardian or probation officer. They need someone to have fun with, to talk to about nothing and everything. They need someone who will answer texts at odd hours, is willing to put up with questionable decision making (time and time again) and provide advice without judgment when asked. They don’t need someone expecting quick, dramatic behavior change. They’re looking for someone to love them like Jesus does.

This is who they’re looking for, whether they know it or not.

Volunteer Application Process

Interested in applying to be a volunteer with us? Great! We take the application process seriously because we are working with a vulnerable population of youth, and their safety and security is our top priority. You may not qualify to become a volunteer with our organization for a variety of reasons. Our commitment to you is to be open and transparent, and we expect the same from our applicants!

Here’s what the process looks like:

  • Reach out to us via email using the Contact Us form below.

  • We’ll schedule a meet and greet with you and one or two JJO or Juvenile Probation staffers at a local coffee shop to discuss your interest in being involved in our mission.

  • If it appears that you would be a good fit with our youth, we’ll provide you an application which you will fill out and return to us, either digitally (scan and email) or at our drop-off location at the Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) in CDA.

  • We will review your application and call your references. If everything looks good we will schedule a visit to your home for a shorter interview. This home visit is important because it gives us another view into who you are and could reveal red flags we need to be aware of.

  • Once the home visit is complete and there are no issues, we’ll schedule you to get your fingerprints done at the JDC. It takes about 4 weeks for your prints to process and for us to receive your background check report.

  • While we wait for your prints to process, we will schedule you to visit our 301 Mentor Program. You will shadow a 301 staff member for a couple of reasons. This gives us another opportunity to get to know you, and for you to meet some of our other volunteers. You will also have the opportunity to meet and interact with our 301 kids. This is helpful for you to get an idea of who the kids we serve are and what they’re like.

  • We’ll review your background report when it is delivered, and if everything checks out we’ll move forward with the volunteer opportunity you have applied for, whether it’s 301 or individual mentoring.
